PRIESTHOOD PREVIEW

Priesthood preview provides an opportunity to help boys understand the importance of the priesthood and strengthen their commitment to prepare to receive it. The priesthood preview meeting is usually held in November.

What is the priesthood preview?

The priesthood preview is a special opportunity for the bishopric to meet with all 11-year-old boys and their parents. The purpose of this meeting is to help boys understand the importance of the priesthood and strengthen their commitment to prepare to receive it.

The priesthood preview is usually held on a ward level so each boy can participate fully and feel the personal love and interest of his parents and priesthood leaders. This provides an opportunity for the bishop to express his love and concern for each boy and explain to the boys the interview he will hold with them before they receive the priesthood. He may also share his vision of what he hopes for the deacons quorum.

When is it held?

The priesthood preview is usually held in November.

Who attends the meeting?

  • 11-year-old boys and their parents
  • The bishopric
  • Members of the Primary presidency

Who plans and conducts the meeting?

The meeting is held under the direction of the bishop. The bishopric may plan the meeting or may invite the Primary presidency or others to assist. The bishop conducts the meeting.

What should be included in the meeting?

Possible topics for the meeting include:

  • Priesthood—the power to serve others
  • The purposes of the Aaronic Priesthood
  • Responsibilities of a deacon
  • Blessings of magnifying priesthood callings
  • How parents can help their sons prepare to receive the Aaronic Priesthood
  • How boys can prepare to receive the Aaronic Priesthood
  • Possible topics for the meeting include priesthood purposes, responsibilities, and blessings (for some ideas, see Faith in God for Boys, pages 12–13)

Musical selections could also be added to help invite the Spirit to the meeting. (For examples, see "Priesthood" in the Topics index of the Children's Songbook.)

Following the closing prayer and song, simple refreshments may be served.

Other Considerations

If wards have very few 11-year-old boys, the program may be held on a multiward or stake level. If the meeting is held on a stake level, it is under the direction of the stake president.

A special priesthood preparation lesson ("The Priesthood Can Bless Our Lives," lesson 47 in the Primary 4, Primary 5, Primary 6, and Primary 7 manuals) is also taught in the Valiant 11 class to help boys understand the blessings and responsibilities of the priesthood.

For additional information, see Faith in God for Boys (guidebook, 2003), 18, and the Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2: Priesthood and Auxiliary Leaders (1998), 176, 237.
